Peterhead Bay pilotage:
The Pilotage Act of 1987 gave the harbour
authorities power to carry out Pilotage activities in
the ports and approaches. In practice, Pilotage is
accomplished through Peterhead Port Services - an
organistaion formed jointly by the two authorities.
This body employs the pilots and administrators the
day-to-day operations of Pilotage.
Peterhead Bay Harbour and Harbours of Peterhead
Pilotage is compulsory within Peterhead Bay Harbour and
the Harbours of Peterhead as follows:
- All oil tankers as defined by Section 10(4) of the
Merchant Shipping Act 1974.
- All vessels whose gross tonnage exceeds 3500 tonnes
(Peterhead Bay Harbour).
- All vessels whose gross tonnage exceeds 200 tonnes
(Harbours of Peterhead).
- All vessels which, in the opinion of the Harbour
Master or any of his authorised deputies, are defective,
damaged or handicapped to such an extent that hey ought
not to be navigated without a pilot, having due regards
to the interests of safety.
- All vessel which, in the opinion of the Harbour Master
or any of his authorised deputies ought not to be
navigated without a pilot, having due regard to the
interests of safety, where an obstruction has been
caused within the harbour due to the occurrence of an
accident, or the presence of a wreck or other similar
cases.
- All vessels carrying more than one tonne of explosives
of IMO Class 1 category.
- All vessels carrying hazardous cargoes or dangerous
goods in bulk in quantities of 100 tonnes or more.
These regulations do not apply to a vessel falling
within the above descriptions whose Master or Mate holds
a valid Pilotage Exemption Certificate in respect of
that vessel, nor to ships whose length is less than 20
metres and fishing boats whose registered length is less
than 47.5 metres.
Radio Communications
Pilotage operations are conducted on VHF Channel 9.
The Master of a vessel requiring a pilot should call
'Peterhead Pilots' on VHF Channel 14 at least one hour
before the pilot is required, giving the following
information:-
- ETA/ETD
- Name and call sign
- Nationality/Flag
- Length, draught and gross tonnage
In fair weather the pilot boards inbound vessels within
five cables SE of the entrance to Peterhead Bay Harbour;
in adverse weather conditions the pilot will board or
leave vessels, as appropriate, inside the breakwaters
but will assist vessels to enter or leave using VHF
Channels 14 or 9 from the pilot cutter.
