Approaches by Sea:
Peterhead Bay lies between Keith Inch to the north
and Salthouse Head to the south. It is protected by the
North Breakwater extending 400 metres SSW from Keith
Inch, and by the South Breakwater extending 750 metres
from Salthouse Head. The entrance between the
breakwaters, which faces SSE is 200 metres wide. Lights
are exhibited at the head of the breakwaters as follows:
South Breakwater F1(2)R.12s.
North Breakwater 1SO.R.G.6s.
A horn Fog Signal, (1) 30s is sounded on the head of the
North Breakwater.
Entry between the breakwaters should be made with
Kirktown leading lights in line, bearing 314 degrees.
The leading lights FR are exhibited from framework
columns, painted reflective orange, each having a white
triangular top mark, the front one pointing up, the rear
pointing down.
Conspicuous objects include the following:
The Town Hall spire lies five cables north of the head
of the South Breakwater, has an elevation of 33 metres,
and is identifiable by its illuminated clock; Reform
Tower, standing on Meethill, has an elevation of 58
metres; and the Power Station chimney, with an elevation
of 183 metres, is located nine cables SSE of the Reform
Tower.
